Covered market hall Rotterdam

In October 2004, the team of architecture studio MVRDV won the competition for planning and designing the new covered market hall in Rotterdam. The tasks based on new European rules prohibiting open air sales of fresh and chilled food. Also, this building should cover the requirement by the municipality to offer more capacity for business and living. MVRDV, together with the property development specialist Provast, found their inspiration in Southern Europe. They discovered the potential of these market halls as a source for the impulse in the development of the district called “Laurenskwartier” whose new architectural centre consists of a 40-m tall building, with a surface of 120x70 m. In cooperation with Dillinger Fabrik gelochter Bleche, one of Europe‘s leading provider of perforated metal facades, they put the inner facade of the building into an impressive effect. It consists of watertransferprinted perforated Aluminum facade panels.
